All You Need to Know About a Gastric Bypass

In the US, one of the most popular medical procedures is gastric bypass. The surgery is performed by creating a pouch at the top of your stomach with the use of a plastic band or surgical staples, thus reducing the size of it. A portion of the upper intestinal tract is redirected, in which the stomach will be permanently separated and divided. This weight loss surgery will result to fewer food intakes, as you will feel full a lot faster. In this case, your body will absorbed less calories and the weight loss process will begin.

Gastric Bypass – things to consider…

Before undergoing the said surgery, there are a lot of things you have to consider first. Aside from the gastric bypass cost, you also need to prepare yourself mentally and emotionally. Try to compare the benefits against the risks it has, and read experiences from gastric bypass forums so you can decide if the risks are worth it. This medical procedure is also known in the United States as Roux-en Y gastric bypass. However there is also another type of surgery, this one is more popular in Europe and are called Laparoscopic gastric bypass or Lap-band. Though this procedure will also create a small pouch at the top of the stomach, the intestines will not be rerouted since there is still an opening to the lower portion of the stomach.

Gastric Bypass – post surgery

After the surgery, the meal pattern is permanently changed. The patients have to follow a gastric bypass diet because if not, they will be the one to suffer since they will vomit and in pain. Here are some of the guidelines that patients of this surgery follow:

  • Only eat a small amount of food at a time since the stomach can only hold tiny amount of food.
  • Chewing the food properly and eating very slowly is a must.
  • Avoid drinking any liquids 30 minutes before and after eating since the stomach can’t accommodate both.
  • With a doctor’s advice, take supplements or vitamins to ensure that the body is getting enough vitamins and minerals.
  • Try to avoid sweet foods which contains a lot of simple sugars, as this may lead to a problem called dumping syndrome that can cause shaking, dizziness, rapid heart rate, sweating, and severe diarrhea.

Like any other surgeries, Roux-en Y also has its own share of dangers associated with the procedure. Some of the common complications and side effects are:

  • Dumping syndrome, mostly experience by patients after surgery in which most of them can’t tolerate sugary foods and foods high in fat such as red meat.
  • Gallstones and gall bladder infections, very common especially if someone loses weight rapidly.
  • Leakage, only a few or 1% of the patients experience food leakage from the stomach towards abdominal cavity.
  • Blood clots, very rare case for patients in this type of surgery

Being aware of the details about your surgery will help you more at ease during and after the surgery. When you know the guideline and things you need to do after the procedure, you will be mentally and emotionally ready as you know what you need to do. Aside from that, knowing the possible side effects will make you strive harder to make the surgery work. Not only to avoid complication or side effects, but also to make all your efforts worth it.

The first few weeks after your gastric bypass surgery will not be easy, in fact it will be tough and difficult as it is the adjustment period for you and the entire system in your body. However, with a full support from your family and friends most days will be lighter. Sometimes, emotional stability helps a lot to achieve physical stability, that’s why along with your physical changes you should be determined to make it work. Being overweight limits your capability as a person because most of the time you feel tired and want to stay home. That’s why gastric bypass surgery’s purpose is to change all this and help you to become a much better individual inside and out — someone who doesn’t worry about dying due to obesity or complications of it.

If you are having weight issues and you are thinking of getting a gastric bypass procedure, always remember that losing weight in a natural way is still best. However, if your doctor already advises you to undergo such surgery, only make sure that your gastric bypass surgery is done at an approved ASBS Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence (BSCOE).
